Treatment using donor sperm from the clinic’s internal sperm bank is advised if:
- the male partner is unable to procreate
- other fertilisation treatments have failed
- the couple are finding other fertilisation treatments difficult
- other reasons exist, such as the male partner carrying a genetic disease, that make using donor sperm the best option.
After the first consultation the doctors at the KinderWunschKlinik will select an appropriate donor with the aim of retaining the physical features of the couple. The social circumstances of donor and recipient are also taken into careful consideration.
This
area of reproductive medicine is well regulated. A test-tube baby
resulting from the use of donor sperm has the right, after his or her 14th birthday, to learn the name of the donor. The parents of the child do not share this right.
There is no guarantee of a successful pregnancy using donor sperm. Statistically a pregnancy rate of 18% per attempt can be achieved. With several attempts the pregnancy rate increases to over 50%.
Unfortunately,
the pregnancy rate using donor sperm is not as high as the rate
conventional fertilisation methods. This is partly due to the fact that
donor sperm must be cryo-preserved for at least six months prior to safe transfer.
If the couple wishes to have a second child using the same donor, the sperm can be reserved for a second pregnancy (providing the donor does not cancel the agreement in the meantime).
All the documentation referring to each individual case is liable to legal storage and kept for a period of 30 years.
